Finally, in the highly charged game the home team held off a stunned No.2 ranked Georgia team 41-34 in the final buzzer at Bryant-Denny Stadium a Saturday night amazing fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide, rated 4th, took an eight point lead and lost the lead as the Bulldogs started their aggressive run. But as always, Alabama left Georgia very disappointed when it scored two spectacular back to back touchdowns at the end of the game.
The game was getting interesting to an indecisive point, with Brown of Alabama overpowering Beck of Georgia, the pass intercepted in the end zone with only 43 seconds to go, and the battle for the Bulldogs’ comeback was shut down.
Georgia, trailing by 23 at halftime, fought back and took their first lead when Beck connected with Dillon Bell for a stunning 67-yard touchdown, putting the Bulldogs up 34-33 with 2:31 left on the clock. But Alabama responded quickly. The very next play, quarterback Jalen Milroe ignored the run, fluttering a deep pass to freshman Ryan Williams who spun out of a tackle before outrunning the defense for a 75-yard touchdown. Milroe then passed to Germie Bernard successfully, for a 2-point conversion, and the Tide had a commanding 41-34 lead.Milroe had a historic night, passing for 27 of 33 yards and 374 yards passing for two touchdowns while rushing for 117 yards and two scores. Below Erling, Milroe completes 23 of 37 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown, while carrying the ball 19 times for 102 yards and two scores, making him the first player in FBS history to accomplish such feats against an AP top-five team per ESPN Research.
Williams is only 17-year-old and he also played well with six recoeptions for 177 yards and one touchdown.
For Georgia there was Beck, who recovering from a poor first half, threw for 439 yards and three touchdowns and three interceptions as well, fumbled and was sacked for a total of three times.
The loss ended Georgia’s stunning 42 game regular season winning streak, a record set by Oklahoma of 1953-1957. It also put to stop the Bulldogs’ 16 game road winning streak.
This win could be the first memory of Georgia for Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, but the Crimson Tide kept piling victories in the series. Over the last decade Alabama has won nine out of ten times over Georgia, including the SEC Championship game last year the Bulldogs didn’t get into the College Football Playoff.
